Fresh dates, especially the Medjools variety, typically have a soft and chewy flesh - but after hanging out on top of the kitchen table or in a pantry, they can dry out over time.

There are a few ways to bring them back to a plump and juicy life.

Soak In Hot Or Boiling Water

Transfer the dates into a bowl. Pour enough hot or boiling water to cover the dates, then allow them to soak for about 10 minutes. Drain the water from the dates. The dates should now be soft and ready to be used. This hands-down is my preferred way to soften dates.

Microwave For A Few Seconds

Arrange the dates in a microwave-safe bowl or plate. Next, warm them in the microwave for about a minute, depending on the strength of your microwave. I recommend warming them in 10-second intervals and removing them when they are soft to your liking.

Steam Them

Place a pot of water over high heat and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, place a steamer basket or a colander inside the pot. Arrange the dates inside the basket/colander, cover with a lid, and allow the steam to soften them. They will soften in about 5 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dates

What are the benefits of eating dates?

Dates are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients that support digestion, heart health, and energy levels. They may also help regulate blood sugar and improve brain function.

What type of food is a date?

A date is a fruit that grows on the date palm tree and is commonly eaten fresh or dried. It is naturally sweet and often used as a natural sweetener in recipes.

Are dates a raisin?

No, dates and raisins are different; dates are whole fruits from the date palm, while raisins are dried grapes. Both are dried fruits but have distinct textures, flavors, and nutrient profiles.

How many dates can I eat per day?

Eating 2–4 dates per day is generally recommended for a balanced diet. However, portion size depends on your dietary needs, calorie intake, and overall sugar consumption.

Are dates and figs the same thing?

No, dates come from date palms, while figs grow on fig trees and have a different texture, taste, and nutrient composition. Figs contain tiny seeds and are less sweet than dates.

Are dates good for weight loss?

Yes, dates can support weight loss when eaten in moderation, as their fiber helps with satiety and digestion. However, they are calorie-dense, so portion control is important.

Do dates help with digestion?

Yes, dates are high in fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements and supports gut health. They can also help prevent constipation and improve overall digestive function.

Are dates high in sugar?

Yes, dates are naturally high in sugar, primarily fructose, making them a sweet but nutritious energy source. Despite their sugar content, they have a lower glycemic index than refined sugar and provide fiber and essential nutrients.

How should I store dates?

Store dates in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness. For long-term storage, refrigeration or freezing can help preserve their texture and flavor.
